NIMBOSTRATUS
Found either as low or middle clouds, nimbostratus formations bring more or less continuous rain, snow, or sleet. When above the freezing level, they constitute one of the most serious icing hazards. The dark or gray massive formation takes its name from "nimho" (rain-bearing) and "stratus" (spread out in layers). Often associated with warm front activity and prolonged, heavy precipitation.
